Student-Run Travel Agency Receives Attention Academy of Hospitality & Tourism students at East High School in Rochester, New York, were featured in the latest issue of Travel Agent magazine. The school runs an all-inclusive online travel agency with 52 students booking travel, transportation and vacation needs for customers in the community. Check out the article here. |

Alumni Use Social Media to Combat HIV/AIDS Khalia Braswell (’08) and KaMar Galloway (’08), alumni from Phillip O. Berry High School Academy of Information Technology in Charlotte, North Carolina, have taken their interests in IT to North Carolina State University. The two computer science majors are working together on a National Science Foundation funded research project using social media to disseminate HIV/AIDS preventive education, and mentor low-income middle schoolers on using technology. City Poly Students Explore STEM Careers Twenty-five Students from City Polytechnic High School in Brooklyn, New York, participated in a job shadow at Verizon’s operation center in Baskin Ridge, New Jersey. The visit included a tour of the high-tech 1.3 million-square-foot complex as well as an executive-led panel discussion about career opportunities in STEM, the importance of core academic subjects, and 21st century employability skills. Charlotte AOE’s Receive $63,000 grant Congratulations to the five Academies of Engineering in the Charlotte-Mecklenberg school district in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Academies of Engineering are the latest recipients of the Jimmie Johnson Foundation’s Champions Grant. The schools will split a grant of $63,000 to help strengthen their engineering program.
