President Obama Visits Miami Central High School
Students at the Academy of Information Technology at Miami Central High School were among the selected few who enjoyed a visit from President Obama, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and Governor Jeb Bush on Friday, March 4th. The President praised the school as a shining example of academic turnaround. The presidential visit kicks off a month devoted to educational policy. Read about the visit here.

Nine Academies Reach Distinguished Status
NAF is pleased to announce that nine academies have reached Distinguished Academy status, and will blaze a trail for ongoing academy improvement and growth for the network at large.

NAF academies recently completed self-assessments designed to gauge their strengths and weaknesses in implementing NAF's model with the goal of using the data to create personalized professional development plans to increase their ability to deliver the best outcomes for young people.

The nine academies who achieved Distinguished status will be honored at the Institute for Staff Development in San Francisco this July.

Congratulations to the following academies:
  • Crooms Academy of Information Technology (Sanford, FL)
  • Northeast High School Academy of Finance (St. Petersburg, FL)
  • San Diego School of Business Academy of Finance (San Diego, CA)
  • Lancaster High School Academy of Finance (Lancaster, NY)
  • Southwest Miami Senior High School Academy of Finance (Miami, FL)
  • Miami Springs High School Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (Miami, FL)
  • A.J. Moore Academy's Academy of Information Technology, Academy of Finance, and Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (Waco, TX)

New NAF Video
Verizon Communications has generously produced a video about the inner workings of the academy structure and the academy experience. The video features interviews with school and district leaders, NAF executives, and alumni. Watch the video.

EVENTS
Two Speakers Announced for 2011 Conferences
  • Tim Sanders, New York Times bestselling author, will speak at the Leadership Summit. Sanders is an expert consultant on leadership, sustainability and strategic marketing. He will provide insight into building people-centric organizations, networks and partnerships. Learn more about Tim Sanders.
  • New York Times bestselling author Steven Berlin Johnson will speak at this year's Institute for Staff Development. Johnson, founder and former editor-in-chief of the online magazine FEED and the website outside.in, will present his ideas on innovation. Learn more about Steven Berlin Johnson.

Join us for our Annual Benefit on May 23rd
Please join us as we honor Eugene A. Ludwig, Founder, Chairman, and Chief Financial Officer of Promontory Financial Group and Richard D. Fairbank, Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Capital One Financial Corporation with the NAF Award for Exemplary Leadership in Education. The evening will include a supper reception where you can meet fellow business leaders, NAF supporters, and academy students, followed by a special performance by renowned singer and pianist, Michael Feinstein. College Readiness Courtesy of Ernst & Young
Ernst & Young is getting NAF academy students ready for the college experience. Their program Keys to Campus presented in New York City on March 22-24th provides guidance counselors, teachers, and students valuable information about transitioning successfully from high school to college.


VITA Program
Many NAF academy students have undergone extensive training with the IRS in order to prepare taxes for low-to-moderate income individuals and families as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Students will be assisted by teachers who also participated in the certification program as well as volunteer accountants who will supervise each return. See the program in action.

ACADEMIES IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Northeast High School Participates in National Engineers Week
As part of National Engineers Week, several students at Northeast High School's Academy of Engineering in Oklahoma City, OK participated in the first annual Oklahoma Engineering Fair at the Oklahoma Science Museum. Students participated in contests where they worked in teams and used their problem solving skills much like they would in the working world. In addition to participating in the Oklahoma Engineering Fair, students at Northeast High also participated in "Engineer for a Day" where they shadowed an engineer to learn what a typical work day was like.
