NEW AT NAF
Federal Government Gets Some HELP from NAF
Karen Webber-Ndour, Principal, National Academy Foundation High School, Baltimore, Maryland, testified in front of the Senate HELP (Health, Education, Labor and Pensions) Committee on Tuesday, May 4, as part of their consideration of the reauthorization of Elementary and Secondary Education Act (called No Child Left Behind in its current form). Her testimony outlined elements that are essential to a high-quality high school with a career academy approach, and how a reauthorization of ESEA might support such strategies. New Schools Approved for Year of Planning Program
Over thirty schools are on the path to starting an academy. Find out what schools have been accepted into the Year of Planning Program.

Call for Curriculum Fellows
Recruitment has begun for the NAF Curriculum Fellows. NAF is looking for teachers who have not yet implemented the NAF curriculum in their Academies or wish to expand the number of NAF courses offered. This program offers teachers direct training in any NAF course, stipends and travel. For further information on becoming a 2010-11 NAF Curriculum Fellow, please contact Laura Fidler at laura@naf.org.

    • Steven J. Adamowski, Ph.D. Superintendent – Hartford’s System of Schools
      Dr. Adamowski has engineered one of the most comprehensive urban school district overhauls in the country. He has introduced an all-choice system of high performing schools, reduced the number of middle schools and has created smaller career-oriented academies, including several NAF Academies, within the city’s underperforming high schools. He will share how the NAF model has been successful in his district.
    • Dr. Richard Ogle, Entrepreneur, Business Consultant, and Author
      Dr. Ogle is a veteran educator and consultant, and the author of Smart World: Breakthrough Creativity and the New Science of Ideas (Harvard Business School Press, May 2007). He work currently focuses on breakthrough creativity in entrepreneurial organizations, and will be bring this knowledge to a session on innovative ways to address the strategic and implementation challenges for academies.

ACADEMIES IN THE SPOTLIGHT
NAF Teacher Wins Illinois Teacher of the Year
The Academy of Finance at Carl Schurz High School in Chicago has a superstar teacher in Kevin Rutter, who has won Illinois Teacher of the Year and just this week traveled to the White House for the National Teacher of the Year Award. The Ethics of Business course at the academy was highlighted recently on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight. Watch the segment.


Advisory Board Recruitment Challenge Winner Announced
Congratulations to Pat Aviezer and the Advisory Board at Olympic Heights Community High School AOF/AOHT in Boca Raton, Florida, winners of the Advisory Board Recruitment Challenge - Part 2. Pat and her Advisory Board successfully recruited 6 new AB members during the contest period. Her new Advisory Board members will provide classroom speakers, mentors, job shadowing experiences, and internships for Academy students. For their hard work and success, NAF will sponsor an Advisory Board member’s trip to the 2010 Annual Institute in Philadelphia. Additionally, Pat will receive a new laptop computer.
