White House Announces Change the Equation Initiative
Marc Forde, a student at the Academy of Engineering at City Polytechnic High School in New York City attended the announcement of the Change the Equation initiative, which focuses on creating widespread literacy in STEM education.  Marc is a sophomore this year and is already thinking about studying biotechnology or operations research in college.

Winning the Brain Race: Nothing is More Important
Students from the academies at Golightly Career/Technical Center in Detroit were guests at the Detroit Economic Club meeting on September 8, where Ursula Burns, Chairman & CEO of Xerox Corporation and NAF Board Member, spoke about the critical role of an educated workforce in maintaining America's leadership in a global economy. In her remarks Ursula said, "If we want a robust economy fueled by an educated workforce, we need to invest in our schools."  Read her speech here.

Meet Our New Director of Student Certification & Assessment
NAF is pleased to welcome Michael Strait, Ph.D. Michael comes to us from his most recent post at the University of Missouri-Kansas City as Director of Academic Assessment and Executive Vice Chancellor. Michael will be leading our effort to create a national student certification system and course assessments to ensure optimal quality in our curriculum. You can reach Michael at mstrait@naf.org.
Curriculum Subject Matter Experts Needed
NAF is looking for professionals in the fields of finance, information technology, and hospitality & tourism to conduct reviews of the following courses: Financial Services, Business Economics, Financial Planning, Entrepreneurship, Web Design, Principles of IT, Programming, Computer Networking, Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, Geography and World Cultures, and Delivering Great Customer Service.  These reviews will help to ensure that students are learning the most current, complete information available. EVENTS
Academy of Engineering Conference Underway in Houston, Texas
The Academy of Engineering (AOE) Counselor and Leadership Conference is in progress now through October 8th.  The conference brings together guidance counselors and leaders in order to help them learn about the AOE model, the resources available to them, and specific Project Lead the Way program elements & readiness criteria. Design Studio: Advisory Board Development
From October 18-20th, California-based academy leaders will meet at the Academy of Finance at San Diego School of Business to work together to learn innovative strategies for continued success with Advisory Board development and work-based learning experiences.
Learning Lab: Personalization
On October 25th and 26th, schools from Florida and the Southeast region will congregate at Miami Beach Senior High School for a Learning Lab designed to strengthen student voice through the use of Youth Truth survey and empower students to take responsibility for their learning through the Miami Dade Student Internship Passport.

AOIT Teacher Named "US Innovative Educator" by Microsoft
Pat Yongpradit, a teacher at the Academy of Information Technology at Springbrook High School in Silverspring, Maryland, has been selected to participate in the 2010 Microsoft Worldwide Innovative Educator Forum in South Africa at the end of October. He has worked hard to increase female participation in his academy, and will be presenting his project, "Game Programming with the Microsoft Zune to Promote High School Women in Technology" at the forum. Congrats, Pat!
